workshops expect to be out before dawn or well after dark. “Our schedule is based on being out in the field when the light is at its most magical. We take advantage of weather and light as we travel, so we may stay out late or rise very early if conditions are going to be ideal. You can’t make great images sitting in your hotel room so the emphasis is on being out in the field when the light is at its best. We sleep and eat around our photographic schedule. If the weather and light are not co- operating we take the opportunity to rest so that when it improves, we are ready to go. My workshops are about working hard for our photographs, but also having great fun in the process.” Of course, crafting great shots is the main aim of the expeditions. “For me, a great landscape photograph needs three things: it needs a great subject, great light and great composition. Two out of the three is not good enough. It goes without saying that it needs to be properly exposed and sharp on the desired subject. Finding a great subject with the right light, and being able to compose and frame it well and make the elements come together, is really the key to getting a great shot.” Asked about his photographic credo, Holko’s answer is simple: “In short, all of my photography is captured from single frame exposures in the field. I don’t do HDR and I don’t do multi-shot composites. I try and get the image right in camera to minimise any post- production time. Any post-production work must be faithful to the original scene. I will clone out the can of coke, but prefer to walk over and pick it up before making the exposure.
