journalist was tested to the limits.” Tasked with finding the youngest British victim and chronicling the story, Cassey and the journalist assigned arrived in Phuket and travelled to Khao Lak where the majority of tourists had been killed. “We eventually found the father of a six-month old, Ruby Rose, who had been washed from his grasp while the family sheltered atop a coconut palm. With his permission, we followed him as he trawled the makeshift morgues searching for the body of his baby. The body of his wife was identified using DNA months later, but Ruby Rose has never been found. Just one heart-wrenching story. And there is no way to describe some of the things we saw.” Cassey and the journalist were then assigned to cover the fatalities in Banda Aceh. Cassey describes arriving at 5am, as the generator floodlit the Banda Aceh mosque (the only lights in a sea of blackness), just as the call to prayer blared out. “As the daylight increased we were to witness scenes of unimaginable carnage – total destruction for mile after mile – scattered with countless decomposing bodies. So we got the images. Next step was to get back to Medan to file for our fast-approaching deadline.” Bearing witness at the front line of national disasters comes with inherent risks. Cassey says it’s important to maintain your cool, and he advises that in today’s climate any photographers wanting to embark on a career in photojournalism need “an insatiable desire to succeed, and the drive of an express train”.
