there is always a typical approach to a shoot – which starts with me trying to understand and relate to what is required from the photograph. I need this so I can make the appropriate decisions on how to shoot the subject.” When it comes to travel and landscape photography, Langford says that the main difficulty is “to try and visualise something that is fresh and exciting to the viewer as well as something that excites myself. I usually start by finding the icon shot – the one that is most obvious and just use that as my starting point as opposed to my final point. At least that way I get to cover the subject pretty thoroughly.” And sometimes getting the shot required means conquering innate fears. “I think climbing up the inside of a wind generator during a storm on a Australian Geographic shoot was one of the worst. I’m actually not that good at heights but when the writer said he was doing it for the experience then I had no choice to follow and visualise that same experience – except that you can’t tell how scared I was from the photograph.” For Langford, it’s all about capturing the experience in the moment. “A great travel image is one that makes you feel like you are there and experiencing it yourself. It’s a shot that engages your senses and takes hold of your imagination.
